Time to celebrate. Two of my pocket sculptures have been selected for The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2024.
When I read the message from Ann Christopher about exploring the idea of making or taking space I immediately thought of my collection of pockets and how I could use these to respond to the theme.
I considered the definition of a pocket as an internal space for storage and the idea of being in and out of pocket. I also considered the negative space within objects such as Torso by Rachel Whiteread and different casting processes including resin, silver, cement, rubber, aluminium and wax. I decided to experiment by taking plaster casts of the inside of my used pockets. After 7 attempts I selected 2 pocket sculptures for submission to the RA Summer Exhibition, both contain traces of pattern, threads and seams and both explore the idea of making or taking space.
The exhibition runs from 18th June to 18th August 2024. Catalogue numbers 1604 and 1605 on the table in the middle of the image below.
