Theresa May with 75 past Prime Ministers
2016
Woven name-tapes of 75 past Prime Ministers with 140 grams of dressmaker pins on canvas, 88 x 72 cm.
On 13th July 2016 Theresa May became our 76th Prime Minister and delivered her first statement in Downing Street, London. Behind her lies a rich history of Prime Ministers, which began with Sir Robert Walpole in the 18th century. To mark this point in history I have created Theresa May’s portrait using woven name-tapes of the past 75 Prime Ministers, predominantly in blue to represent the Conservative Party. Highlights in red include Labour Prime Ministers Harold Wilson and Tony Blair. Size 10 labels normally used to identify ladies garments are pinned to the canvas as earrings and necklace, subtle details which pay reference the Prime Minster's address at Number 10.
