Collection of clothing labels since 1998.
My work with clothing labels began as a result of dissecting rag garments during site-specific research. It led to the on-going collection of labels as a source of materials from which I produce images and sometimes-sculptural objects. 10,000 of these labels are presented in Sunday Best, a 3 metre x 3 metre royal gown that continues to be exhibited nationally, and may be available on request.
I store these found clothing labels in shoeboxes sorted by colour, size, woven, printed, overs and personalised names. The labels offer a glimpse of high street clothiers and outlets, many of the woven labels being replaced with a cheaper printed alternative. My collection is in the process of being photographed and will be available to view on my website soon.
