Summer Exhibition, Djanogly Gallery, Nottingham. 29 June - 13 July 2013.

Dairy Cow has been selected for the Summer Exhibition at the Djanogly Art Gallery, Lakeside Arts Centre, University Park, Nottingham. NG7 2RD. Tel: 0115 951 3192.

29 June - 13 July,  (Monday - Saturday 11am - 5pm,  Sunday 12 noon - 4pm).

Dairy Cow (132cm x 132cm) is made up of thousands of used garment labels; each label is attached to the canvas using dressmaking pins. Dairy Cow has attracted much attention and won a major prize. The piece has been described as ‘an extravagant rescue of waste’ that overwhelms the viewer by the sheer mass of used garment fragments. Clothes labels assembled in the image of a Dairy Cow not only offer the viewer a strong sense of community, but also reflect on the high value we place on dairy products.

Cley 13: The Flight of the Spoonbill

4th July – 4th August 2013

Crabpot Books on the High Street at Cley-next-the Sea, NR25 7RN sells second hand and antiquarian books with a specialist interest in bird books.

In response to this site artist Joy Pitts has collected 5000 used clothes labels and assembled them in the image of a ‘Mute Swan’. This particular collection of second hand labels are a record of garments that were discarded by the community during 2011; the collection pays reference to the cycle of image renewal and transformation that is associated with the swan.

‘Mute Swan’ is inspired by the book ‘The Ugly Duckling’ by author Hans Christian Andersen; a story of transformation mirroring Andersen’s own life.
