Nottingham Castle Open 2013: Artist Testimonial

Joy Pitts
3D PRIZE-WINNER, 2004

“Winning the 3D prize in 2004 was an invaluable asset to my practice both in terms of the practical experience and as a platform for development. The winning sculpture ‘Robe’ was also part of my final show as I graduated in 2004 from BA (Hons) Fine Art, Nottingham Trent School of Art and Design. The prize provided confidence in my working processes and I continued to MA Fine Art graduating in 2005 with Distinction. Since then ‘Robe’ has been exhibited in open competitions in Wales (2008) and Norfolk (2012) as well as a recent invitation to show the sculpture in Suffolk during 2013. My practice remains focused on the study of people and their garments, and recent developments include a commission from Sir Paul Smith using his designer labels. I have also been invited to show a selection of work in Nottingham’s Lace Market Creative Quarter.”

Summer Exhibition, Djanogly Gallery, Nottingham. 29 June - 13 July 2013.

Dairy Cow has been selected for the Summer Exhibition at the Djanogly Art Gallery, Lakeside Arts Centre, University Park, Nottingham. NG7 2RD. Tel: 0115 951 3192.

29 June - 13 July,  (Monday - Saturday 11am - 5pm,  Sunday 12 noon - 4pm).

Dairy Cow (132cm x 132cm) is made up of thousands of used garment labels; each label is attached to the canvas using dressmaking pins. Dairy Cow has attracted much attention and won a major prize. The piece has been described as ‘an extravagant rescue of waste’ that overwhelms the viewer by the sheer mass of used garment fragments. Clothes labels assembled in the image of a Dairy Cow not only offer the viewer a strong sense of community, but also reflect on the high value we place on dairy products.

Cley 13: The Flight of the Spoonbill

4th July – 4th August 2013

Crabpot Books on the High Street at Cley-next-the Sea, NR25 7RN sells second hand and antiquarian books with a specialist interest in bird books.

In response to this site artist Joy Pitts has collected 5000 used clothes labels and assembled them in the image of a ‘Mute Swan’. This particular collection of second hand labels are a record of garments that were discarded by the community during 2011; the collection pays reference to the cycle of image renewal and transformation that is associated with the swan.

‘Mute Swan’ is inspired by the book ‘The Ugly Duckling’ by author Hans Christian Andersen; a story of transformation mirroring Andersen’s own life.
